Swim Fundraiser and other news
The swim fundraiser at Joshica's Planet Canine was a HUGE success. The donations netted enough for us to spay/neuter 4 dogs. This is a tremendous help and we look forward to having another swim fundraiser before summer.
The vaccination clinic at TSC in Niles vetted over 120 dogs and over 10 cats. Everyone was on their best behavior.
Did I take my camera to either of these events?? No, I forgot!

R.I.P. Laddie
I probably shouldn't be writing this right now since I am so upset, but I need to let everyon know tht Laddie passed away at aproximately 3:30 am November 22, 2012.
Laddie was supposed to stay at the vet office for treatment for three days. I was called Wednesday morning by the office to inform me that he would be sent home later that day, but if he wasn't better by Friday morning to bring him back in (I have my own thoughts on why he was sent home when he had only been there one night with a holiday in-between the three nights...)
When I went to pick Laddie up, he was lethargic, listless, you name it. I inquired about an IV since he still had the port in his arm, but the tech said I wouldn't be giving any IV fluids. The veterinarian was not in the office so I couldn't talk to her. Was I mad? Heck, yes!
As Laddie settled into his crate at our home, he showed no interest in water, Gatorade, or his specially made rice/cottage cheese/chicken mixture (The tech said he had no interest in eating and only took one or two laps of water there. WHY send him home???).
I went to bed at 11pm. I finally fell asleep around midnight, but still worried. At 3 something a.m., I woke up to one of the dogs whining (it was Tess). I opened up he room so that she could lay on the couch. I checked in on Laddie and saw that he had had more diarrhea and he was cold. I knew then that even a trip to the ER was not going to help.
I will cancel the Chipin account after the holiday. Thank you to all the wonderful, caring people who had texted and called.

Valporaiso Adoption Event SUCCESS!
What a great time we had in Valpo this weekend (November 10 and 11)! There were so many people looking at dogs, cats, and items to purchase. I sure wish we had brought more money; we could have bought some bling collars for the dogs!
Even though we do not have Chancey in Indiana yet, so many people looked at her picture and took one of our cards to get more information on her. A short-haired medium sized German Shepherd or Collie mix, she ran from animal control in Ohio all over the highway! She narrowly escaped a semi's wheels. Luckily, our temporary foster in Ohio has her at her home now awaiting transport to Indiana this Saturday and her foster mom, Tiffany :-)
Looking for gifts?? Check out the items at TSC in Niles this Sunday being sold by the rescues. There are many hand-made items.

Notre Dame Blessing of the Animals
WOW! Could it be any colder? Even though it was raining and very cold, a number of humans and their canine companions came out to Notre Dame for the Blessing of the Animals, the Dog Walk, games and prizes!
I want to thank Jeff, Jennifer,Gary W., Liam, and Gary M. for assisting with all the dogs we brought as well as set up and tear down.
Congratulations to Jennifer and Gary M. for their winning raffle tickets. That was so awesome!
We held a vote during the event that this would be our last outside event for the year, LOL. We were too cold and I don't know about anyone else, but I was very tired after.

Isis the Bloodhound and Helios the Golden mix: SAFE!
Isis and Helios both came from the Pike County Animal Shelter in Ohio. Sadly, this shelter is like so many in that they have very little room. When they run out of room, adopters, and rescues, well... they make room the only way they can. This shelter is so small, that the staff doesn't even take in cats.
On our trip to Pike County to pick up some puppies and McTavish (the Chinese Crested), we also transported Isis and Helios to their rescues!!! What a full truck. We made it back home safely after getting a late start back (okay, I admit, I missed the exit going towards Ohio!).
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OH397.html
This is just one shelter we work closely with. The others are South Bend Animal Care and Control (on Facebook; South Bend, IN) and Shelby County Animal Shelter http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/KY139.html Shelbyville, KY.

Update on Aspen
In a strange turn of events, we had the pleasure of returning a dog to his family today.
Aspen came to us from a local overcrowded shelter (if rescues do not pull from these places, they are forced to euthanize). It was not unusual for us to pull dogs from these shelters and give them a new chance at life. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. While Aspen was in foster care, we noticed that he did not enjoy being in a house (really did not like it!). We tried adopting him out, but still these issues continued. Upon getting him back, we heard about the story of a Siberian Husky named Aspen who was stolen from a Berrien Springs home (Here is the original story:
http://www.wsbt.com/news/wsbt-thieves-leave-letter-explaining-why-they-stole-dog-20120620,0,1829011.story
Well, today it was confirmed that our Aspen was actually the Aspen that was stolen from the pen. Aspen has a microchip, but it had shifted in his body, so when the first shelter scanned him, they could not locate it. After some searching, we found the microchip and confirmed that our Aspen was truly the stolen Aspen. We are so happy to be able to reunite an owner and their dog! The story of his return will be on WSBT tonight at 5 and 6. Here is a link to the print article: http://www.wsbt.com/news/wsbt-aspen-the-dog-is-back-home-20120807,0,2215548.story
We are so happy that Aspen is back with his family! He immediately went to them and was OVERJOYED to be back with his people!

Some things to think about..
Ever thought about fostering? We need foster homes. The more foster homes we have, the more lives we save. Its that simple.
Touching words... those who have been blessed with dogs, understand the hurt the comes when they pass... but sometimes, we need to reach out and help another.

Goodbye Obi-Wan.. we will miss you..
Today our sweet Doberman, Obi-Wan, lost his heroic battle with cancer. Obi-Wan was an ambassador for his breed. Such a sweet boy with a heart of gold. He was one that made friends wherever he went. We will miss our boy, but are glad that he did not suffer.
Obi, we will see you again at the Rainbow Bridge..

Did you know??
Did you know that you can register your mixed breed (or purebred dog without papers) with national recognized kennel clubs and earn performance titles with them???
AKC has a Canine Partners Program. This program allows any mixed breed dog to participate in performance events at AKC events! This means that you can earn titles in Obedience, Rally, Agility and Therapy with your rescue dog!! It's easy to sign up!
If you have a purebred dog (like Sarah), but do not have AKC papers, you can register in AKC with the Purebred Alternative Listing! This allows you to earn titles with your purebred dog in AKC!!
For more information visit AKC Canine Partners
ALSO! You can obtain a tracking number from ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) for any type of dog and earn Rally, Obedience and Agility titles from ASCA!!
For more information visit ASCA
Lastly, UKC (United Kennel Club) allows mixed breed dogs to register and participate in UKC events (Obedience, Rally and Agility) as well! You can register under their "Limited Privilege Registration" and start competing! UKC also allows deaf dogs to participate!!
For more information visit UKC
Need a place to train for these events?? Visit Joshica's Planet Canine for classes in Obedience, Agility, Therapy and Rally! Training your dog is a great way to bond with your dog! Both Ann and Lacey participate in different events - Ann does Conformation, Obedience, Canine Freestyle and is dabbling in Agility. Lacey does Conformation, Obedience, Rally, and Agility. They both work with rescue dogs (with the exception of conformation)!
Barkin' at WalMart with Purina!
Sara and Ruger enjoyed a semi-hot day at WalMart in Elkhart today. The event was hosted by Purina who handed out free bandanas, bracelets, and balloons. For those rescues that participated, Purina gave coupons for Purina foods.
Ruger participated well by showing off his sit (when he wasn't focused on the dogs next to him!) and yipping once in a while to get more people to come over to the tents. Congratualtions Sneha on his training!
Sara was shy at first, but really warmed up to quite a few people as they came up to the pen. She appeared to especially like one gentleman that could not adopt her due to his schedule. Ah well, we will find the perfect family for her soon.

Ivy sits waiting....
Our Sweet Ms. Ivy has been waiting a long time for her perfect home. See, sweet Ivy isn't perfect. She has some flaws, she knows this, we know this.. but we also know that she will make someone a FABULOUS pet. Where, oh where, could Ivy's forever home be?? She would make a GREAT pet for an older couple.. or a family with older children... She would love to be the "dog child" of a couple, or the beloved companion of a single person.
We wonder day after day why Ivy has not been adopted... We know that most black dogs get overlooked because they are common. But our Ivy is anything but common! She is special to us! We also know that our Ivy doesn't like to be hugged... but she still wants affection. She would love to cuddle with you on the couch and have you give sweet pets on her head.
Let's see if we can get our Ivy adopted this month! She deserves to have a family of her own!!

We DESPERATELY need to buy Esme a heavy-duty cage. We have one picked out from Amazon.com and it costs $232.96 (including shipping). Esme destroys cages, which is making it difficult to house train her. This cage would change her world for the best! Please donate to help us buy this cage!! Even $5 would be helpful. Forever homes needed!
Our girls, Ivy and Esme, have been waiting patiently for a forever home. They like being with their foster mom, but would really LOVE to have a family of their home. Both girls have been with us for quite some time and we just don't understand why people keep overlooking them. They are both fantastic dogs!
Skip, the gentleman of the bunch, is still very sad from losing his forever home. We know that his broken heart would be mended if he had a new family that loved him dearly. He is great boy who really deserves a new, loving home.
Can you help these great dogs find new homes???

Update on Faith!
Dear Faith's Followers,
Thank you for all your care, concern and donations toward Faith.
Since our first visit to MSU Faith has been receiving drops in her eyes twice daily until our next visit back to MSU on April 24th for a recheck. I will plan to give another update after that visit, but we do know now that if she does have the surgery to remove her cataracts, it wouldn't be until she is about 8 months old. Faith will be 4 months old on April 16th. She has been growing like a little weed, weighing 5 lbs now. As of yesterday, she is looking like a different little girl because she went to the groomer. I asked that the hair around her face be cut very short so that I could get the drops in her eyes easier.
To give you some idea of what life is like for Faith each day.... Faith has her own room, and this is where she sleeps and eats, or just needs to be to keep out of trouble. She does have 3 big brothers that would love to eat her food and play with her adorable toys, so we like to have a room for her own to keep her things safe. However....Faith doesn't really want to be in her room unless it's bed time or nap time. She LOVES her big brothers and wants to play with them or even just lay with them all the time. Her favorite is Bubba - a 97 lb Doberman, second favorite is Drake - a 82 lb Retriever, and the third is the "father figure" to all others and the best dog in the world... Hogan - a 65 lb Golden Retriever and he is actually the one she loves to sleep with, and he lets her. Two other absolute favorite things Faith loves is being outside and playing with a cap to my bottled water.
Faith's personality is absolutely precious! To look at her just brings a huge smile to my face. Her being blind has not stopped her from one second of happiness and joy. She lives each day to the fullest!

Last week, Faith traveled to Michigan State University for an evaluation to see what stage her cataracts were in. We found out that Faith has cataracts in both eyes, but still has some vision. She will have to wait until 6 to 9 months of age to be evaluated as a surgical candidate.
At this time, Faith must receive topical medication in both eyes twice daily (no missing a dose!!) to control the inflammation.
Cataract surgery costs between $3100 and 3700 for both eyes performed at the same time. An example of the surgery can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyfp0944dFA
REMINDER: Swim Fundraiser at Joshica's Planet Canine April 22nd for Obi-Wan's chemotherapy costs. Call 574-522-8584 NOW.

Exciting News at Dream Paws!
This month has been VERY exciting here at Dream Paws! Yesterday, Cessna took off (literally... by plane!) to her new home! Her new "Puppy Parent" is a pilot, who flew in to pick her up (he is also the one who brought her over from a shelter in Ohio). Our latest update was that Cessna arrived safely and is playing nicely with her new Border Collie sibling!
Trooper looks like he FINALLY found his forever home! Yeah Trooper! So proud of your patience!
Today, Rio got to meet horses for the first time. He thought they were interesting and did not shy away from them. One of the horses even came down to sniff him. It also seems that he lacks any interest in herding.
Mario is in his new foster home and adjusting wonderfully. He loves to help his new foster mom pick up sticks in the yard and loves to meet new people! He also told her that he needed (or wanted) a bath by getting into the bathtub by himself!
Check back soon, as we might have some new additions arriving at Dream Paws in the next few weeks!

I saved my Foster Mom!
While my foster mom went out to get the mail, she placed me on the zip-line so I wouldn't follow her out to the road, but could keep an eye on her. In the distance, I heard a strange noise and barked at her to tell her I didn't like the noise. My foster mom wasn't listening! I strained, pulled, barked some more, and eventually pulled my collar over my head- setting me free. I ran to my foster mom, pushed her against the mailbox, grabbed her boot in my teeth and tried to pull her back to the house.
I know she was frightened, but I had to get her off of the road away from the scary noise. Just as I pulled her off of the road, a propane tanker came barreling down the street right where my foster mom was standing!!! The trucker got out and apologized. He hadn't seen my foster mom AT ALL. It scares me to think what would have happened if I couldn't have gotten her away from that horrible noise.

A Prayer for Shelter Dogs
Tonight I say a prayer for all of the dogs sleeping (or not sleeping) in shelters near and far.
May a person with realism, vision and acceptance walk past your gate.
May they see that the jumping dog in front of them is desperate to say hello.
May they realize that with a bit of training, you can learn polite greeting manners.
May they understand that you are not perfect, but that you can be trained to be a good dog.
May they understand if you are shy and overwhelmed, and see that with love, encouragement and confidence you will come out of your shell. May they understand this may take quite a few months.
May they see that the thunder and bluff is just that; and with training that teaches you in a peaceful way to get the distance you want from whatever “monster” that scares you, you will learn to resolve your conflicts with the world constructively and gain confidence.
May they understand you are curious and inquisitive and need to explore the world, but also you will need clear boundaries and kind but constant guidance.
And may they decide to make a life commitment to you. For who you are. The brilliant, the challenging, the aloof, the goofy, the exuberant, the serious, the silly, the reserved, the obnoxious, the funny, the athletic, the laid back, the complex and beautiful; the real dog that makes you the completely unique you.
Divorce is not an option in adopting. This is not fast food or Disneyland. This is real dog, real relationship and real commitment.
May you feel the touch of a kind hand and hear a gentle word.
May you take a car ride to your forever home.
When you mess up, may you be forgiven.
May your new family understand that it can take months and sometimes years of training, guidance and learning to help you be the best you can become. May they make that commitment to you.
May they accept you for the dog that you are in spite of all of the training. And may they smile at your imperfections as much as your achievements.
May they protect you, nurture you, give you exercise and adventures together.
And may you someday fall asleep on the bed, sighing in deep contentment, peace and security, spooned against your forever friend.
This I pray for you my friend, and for all dogs. This I pray.
Sleep in peace and we will both dream and pray for your forever home.

Purdue University and Obi-Wan
Obi-Wan's foster mom will be taking him to Purdue onThursday to see if there is a Lymphoma study he is applicable for. In the event that there is nothing available, he may start on chemo (CCNU) at the South BEnd Animal Clinic in Osceola. Special Needs Dobermans are in the process of donating money for two treatments and we have monies set aside to complete one more treatment ($340 per treatment average). Pass the word everyone!!! We need monies for three more treatments (6 total) and liver panels.

Obi Wan
Obi Wan has stated his Predisone treatment today. The Prednisone is only to slow the progression of the disease. The longer he is on Prednisone, the less chance that the chemo will work. PLEASE help Obi Wan get started on his chemo. We would really like to begin treatment no later than two weeks from today's date.
If you have met Obi Wan in person, you would understand why we are so willing to help hm live a longer life.
If you haven't met him, you NEED to! He has the greatest personality.

Obi Wan and oncology consult
Please send positive vibes and wishes for our dear young boy, Obi Wan. He is heading up to Grand Rapids Wednesday for an oncology consult. His lymphectomy came back positive for follicular lymphosarcoma. He is going up north to see what we can expect and how we can help him out! We have started him on B.S.S.T. (herbal immune system enhancer) and the prebiotic/probiotic mixture will begin when he returns.
It will be hard to teach tomorrow as my thoughts will be with him all day.

A Happy Boy!
Trooper looks so happy posing with Santa... do you know what he asked Santa for this year?
A home of his own!
So far, he wish has not been granted. Let's see if we can get this happy boy a home soon!
Obi's adventure at PetSmart
Obi Wan is in his new home!!! This morning he went shopping at PetSmart with his new family. While he was there, a fresh, young, tiny, yappy critter came around the corner of one of the aisles and blasted him with yaps. Obi, after a minute or so of this, decided he had had enough. With one big, bad, 'WOOF!', the little critter stopped yapping, shook, and skittered back to his owners.
I wish we could have been there to see this!
