A Shelter Dog's Lament
Don’t be scared by what you see, when I cower and hide, it’s not me.
I had a past if I could say...what things had happened,
you would never walk away.
You’d figure out why, you’d understand,
why I flinch away at your outstretched hand.
I want to trust you more than anything,
I shake so bad that it’s hard to breathe.
Don’t give up on me, I want to love,
to know a gentle touch would be a gift from above.
So don’t be scared by what you see,
when I cower and hide, it’s just not me.

SPREAD the word: we need FOSTERS
Please help spread the word. We are in need of fosters for large-breed, short-haired dogs. There is a gorgeous 4 year old Rottweiler at South Bend Animal Care and Control. For those knowing people who enjoy smaller breeds, they also just received a young Dachshund AND a 1 year old Pekignese!!

Got a dog-related question that needs answered?
Dear Piper,
My 6 month old Boxer mix puppy, Ely, constantly jumps on people. We tell him “NO!” and push him off, but he doesn’t seem to be learning to stay off. What can we do to make him greet people appropriately?

Tired of jumping dogs in Indiana
Dear Tired,
Jumping dogs is a constant problem for puppy owners. Although we don‟t realize it, but we are actually rewarding jumping dogs when we push them off. Dogs jump because they are excited and want attention. By pushing them off, we are doing exactly what we want them to do. Touching them! We need to train them that they get more attention when they keep “four on the floor”. Begin training by having a person hold Ely‟s leash (ignoring him) or if no person is available, tie Ely‟s leash to a door. Walk up to Ely and if he keeps “four on the floor” reward him immediately with a treat. If he doesn‟t, immediately turn and walk away. Repeat using different people. You will see Ely learning the rules of the game very quickly. When people are coming to your house, hand out treats before they enter and have Ely on a leash. If he keeps “four on the floor” let the people reward him. If not, have them turn and walk away immediately. Over time, Ely will learn not to jump.

Malaki from Indianapolis
Coming soon will be the CUTEST little boy you have ever seen. He was found in the streets outside of Indianapolis. After being taken to a veterinarian to see if he had a microchip (he did not), the veterinarian began putting in a phone call to the local pound to have him picked up! Luckily, word spread fast and a local rescuer pulled him from the veterinarian's office and held him at her home until he could be transported up to us (his previous home has not been located).
Malaki (My Angel) is a 4 1/2 month old male Whippet mix. He gets along with dogs, cats, and all humans. His foster mom is presently working on housebreaking and Basic Manners. His first night he did get into the kitties' litter box for 'tootsie rolls'. Ewwww...
We are hoping to get a DNA testing company to donate a kit or kits to us for those fur babies that have a mom and/or dad that don't leave calling cards. This will help clarify breeds to families that are interested in the possible pedigrees of their new companions. Individuals can also donate to the Paypal button on the Sponsor link on the front page to assist us in purchasing the DNA kits!
